Nene Yashiro is in her first year at high school。 She has a crush on one of the older boys, Minamoto。 But Nene’s been unlucky in love before (the last boy said she had legs like a daikon radish), and Minamoto’s super popular so getting his attention won’t be easy against the competition。 Right now she’s desperate enough to try approaching one of the Seven School Mysteries, Hanako-san of the Toilet, who allegedly can grant wishes。According to rumor, Hanako-san can be found in the third stall from Nene Yashiro is in her first year at high school。 She has a crush on one of the older boys, Minamoto。 But Nene’s been unlucky in love before (the last boy said she had legs like a daikon radish), and Minamoto’s super popular so getting his attention won’t be easy against the competition。 Right now she’s desperate enough to try approaching one of the Seven School Mysteries, Hanako-san of the Toilet, who allegedly can grant wishes。According to rumor, Hanako-san can be found in the third stall from the end in the girl’s restroom on the third floor of the old school building。 Knock three times and call her name twice, and Hanako-san will appear。 Nene does this, but the rumor was a teensy off。Hanako is a boy! Why he’s got that name and is bound in the girls’ restroom is a subject he’s not ready to discuss right now。 But he is willing to grant Nene’s wish。 After a fashion。 Since the use of magic to grant a wish requires a sacrifice equal to the power of the magic, Hanako-kun tries to assist Nene with confessing her love in a normalish “wingman” way。When this approach proves fruitless, Nene wants to try magic。 She learns that Hanako-kun has a “matchmaking item”, mermaid scales, and swallows one before learning the details。 Turns out that if you swallow one, you turn into a fish and the slave of the mermaid–but if two people swallow matching scales, they share the curse and thus a bond。 After some action, Hanako-kun swallows the other scale to be bonded to Nene。 But in exchange, she will now need to be his assistant。The “Seven School Mysteries” is a common plotline for kids’ horror and fantasy stories in Japan。 Swapping in a male Hanako is a bit of a twist, as is making him the protagonist。 Turns out that the supernatural beings inhabiting the school are affected by the stories that are told about them, which can make them more or less dangerous, depending on the rumor。 Hanako-kun’s job is keeping the supernatural and human worlds from fatally colliding。Nene’s assistance initially is just toilet cleaning, but soon she’s needed to help with a series of missing objects, allegedly “taken by the fairies。” The fairies turn out to need her and Hanako-kun’s help as much as the people who’ve lost stuff。Oh, this is a shounen manga, so we need a rival! Kou Minamoto (not the same person) is the descendant of a famous exorcist clan, and wants to follow in their tradition by eradicating Hanako-kun。 As it turns out, he’s a rookie, and not ready to take on the more powerful than he appears Hanako。 He joins the team to protect Nene from her boss。Then the trio investigates a haunted staircase that retcons away people who tread on the wrong step。 This turns out to be another School Mystery, but one that’s right now far more malevolent。 The volume ends on a cliffhanger as Nene’s about to lose her head over the situation。The art is cool, especially when it leans into spooky or stylized panels。 The initial premise works well enough, but how it’s fleshed out over future volumes is going to determine if I will pick them up。Content note: Hanako-kun likes looking at naughty magazines, and there are some breast jokes。 (Nene’s self-conscious about being a late bloomer。) And of course, a bit of horror-flavored violence。 Suitable for junior high readers on up。Recommended for (mild) horror fans。 。。。more

A tale of the seven school mysteries has never been so enticing。

loved, loved, loved !!! i originally watched the anime, but i heard the manga was better so i gave it a chance (i usually don’t read mangas of anime i watch)。 the characters are charming, the story is full of humor but also really heartfelt at others— and i think it does a good job at balancing those two emotions(?)

I saw this book on a display table at Barnes & Noble and I was like, “Ha! Toilet bound!” But then as I was walking around the store, I was like totally haunted and kept thinking about it and had to pick it up! Cute and easy read, but nothing out of this world。

The creepy urban legend set-up contrasted with the sweetness of the characters is fun。 I liked the scary mermaid too。 Cute but not one that grabbed me enough to read more。

The art style is GORGEOUS, but I felt the story was lacking in。。。 well, story。 Other than discovering the seven mysteries of the school, there was no real plot。 I didn’t feel a connection to the characters, and Nene’s unlucky love life didn’t garner my sympathy。 Hanako does intrigue me, though。 His innocent demeanor and creepy characteristics make me wonder about his past。 There’s definitely more to him than meets the eye。 Regardless of my wariness, I’m holding out hope for Volume 2。

I'm really falling for the characters at two volumes in currently。Five volumes in and I love it! I like all the characters, the plot, the art style!! I'm really looking forward to more!Edit 3/21/21: volume 6 was good! I’m curious about Nene’s future! 。。。more

Read more graphic novel reviews at The Graphic Library。Despite its ridiculous title, this was a really fun book。 Hanako-kun is one of the seven mysteries of Yashiro’s school。 She summons Hanako-kun one day because she’s heard she can be granted one wish, but Hanako is nothing like she expected。 To begin with, he’s a boy bound to a toilet in the girls' bathroom! Yashiro is desperate to be part of a couple, so she eats a mermaid scale and tries to give its matching scale to a boy she has a crush on (as legend says he will be inexplicably bound to her forever), but she chickens out at the last minute。 The scale turns her into a fish, but Hanako eats the matching scale to save her from a worse fate, and fights off the mermaid who has come to claim Yashiro。 From that point on, Hanako and Yashiro and bound together with a supernatural bond。 Yashiro becomes Hanako’s assistant and the two continue to explore the supernatural elements of the school, keeping them from harming the mortal students whenever possible。There are some interesting elements in this story。 While Yashiro is boy crazy, she is also really unsure of her own identity and is using her crushes as a way to mask that。 Hanako is not an evil spirit per se, but he has some twisted elements in his past that he is trying to atone for。 There are some dark, including anything with the tiny spirits, Mokke, in them。 Some of the spiritual bits are a little dark, which might be a little scary for younger audiences。 But, while there are dark moments, there are equally cute bits with the tiny, mischievous spirits known as Mokke, who are widely responsible with inconsequential items going missing for hundreds of years (you know the feeling, like when you seriously can't find your glasses anywhere。。。)。 The illustrations of this title consist of persistent dark lines, contributing to an overall darker feeing, and everything is fairly well detailed。 The era seems ageless based on the dresses and the school style that has mixes of ornate and modern。Sara’s Rating: 8/10Suitability Level: Grades 8-12 。。。more

。。。more

The art style is beautiful and the story idea very interesting, but i dislike how it turned out。 I would give the art style a - because of how young the 15-16 year old look, they look like elementary school children, otherwise the style is beautiful but it would have been better if the characters would look more their age。I dislike Nene, she acts younger and is drawn to look younger, she is supposed to be 15-16。Also the way she was introduced made me dislike her, she came to Hanako to wish to ge The art style is beautiful and the story idea very interesting, but i dislike how it turned out。 I would give the art style a - because of how young the 15-16 year old look, they look like elementary school children, otherwise the style is beautiful but it would have been better if the characters would look more their age。I dislike Nene, she acts younger and is drawn to look younger, she is supposed to be 15-16。Also the way she was introduced made me dislike her, she came to Hanako to wish to get together with the boy she liked, but she actually never talked to the boy and didn't know him, so she just liked the idea of him。 Also she wanted to use magic to bind the boy she liked to her, but failed and ended up being turning into a fish, so Hanako had to safe her。 She was depicted as a pushover and well。。 a weak female character。I really wish that the mangaka would have used a different way to introduce Nene, and would have given her a stronger character。 。。。more

I'm probably no longer the target audience for this。 I saw the weird title and cover and thought I could give it a try as Japanese folklore is always cool, but nothing about it stood out。I was ready to accept an average manga with comedic elements, just for entertainment, but I'm going to have to pass on this one。 Maybe the art style looks a bit more inspired than the usual, but it's not enough to carry an entire comic book。There was something weird about it though。 It all seems to be about a bu I'm probably no longer the target audience for this。 I saw the weird title and cover and thought I could give it a try as Japanese folklore is always cool, but nothing about it stood out。I was ready to accept an average manga with comedic elements, just for entertainment, but I'm going to have to pass on this one。 Maybe the art style looks a bit more inspired than the usual, but it's not enough to carry an entire comic book。There was something weird about it though。 It all seems to be about a bunch of high-schoolers, but all of the characters were drawn younger than they should be (with the exception of the occasional popular guy for some reason?)。 I don't know, not for me。 。。。more
